Sophisticated New York Sour with an effervescent twist

Instructions

The Empire State Twilight is a sophisticated, visually layered variant of the classic New York Sour, which traditionally features whiskey, lemon juice, simple syrup, and a red wine float. This innovative version introduces a hint of orange and a sparkling wine float to give the drink an effervescent twist that's reminiscent of the New York skyline at dusk. Ingredients: - 2 oz rye whiskey - 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice - 1/2 oz Grand Marnier or other high-quality orange liqueur - 1/2 oz simple syrup - 1 egg white (optional, for froth and texture) - 1 oz sparkling wine (preferably dry) - 1/2 oz spiced red wine reduction (recipe below) - Ice - Orange twist, for garnish Spiced Red Wine Reduction: - 1 cup of a bold red wine (like a Cabernet Sauvignon) - 2 tablespoons of honey or sugar - 2 cinnamon sticks - 3 cloves - 1 star anise Glass: - Rocks glass Instructions: 1. Begin by preparing the spiced red wine reduction. In a saucepan, combine red wine, honey or sugar, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise. Bring to a simmer over medium heat and reduce the mixture by half, which should take about 15-20 minutes. Strain into a container and allow it to cool. 2. In a shaker, combine rye whiskey, fresh lemon juice, Grand Marnier, simple syrup, and egg white (if using). 3. Dry shake (without ice) vigorously for about 15 seconds to emulsify the egg white. 4. Add ice to the shaker and shake again until well chilled. 5. Strain the cocktail into a rocks glass filled with ice. 6. Carefully pour the sparkling wine over the back of a spoon to float it on top of the cocktail. 7. Gently add the spiced red wine reduction by drizzling it over the back of a spoon to create a separate layer, adding a beautiful gradient effect – resembling a twilight sky. 8. Garnish with an orange twist, expressing the oil over the drink and placing it on the rim. 9. Serve immediately and enjoy the multifaceted flavors of the Empire State Twilight.
